At some point between me disappearing to the void and waking back in the mortal realm the candles blew out. The small string of lights, which ran in a line against the back wall, gave barely any light and with the candles gone everything had this bleary near-death kind of look.

Matteo’s handsome face came into view full of concern. Bethany hovered in the back ground, but it was too dim for me to see her expression. Did I disappear from this room or had the whole thing been a trick of my mind?

“Are you all right?”

“I think so.” I rolled to the side to get off my seat.

Matteo reached out his hand to help me up, but not wanting a flush of Matteo emotions just yet, I pretended not to notice.

“What happened?” I wanted to hear what everyone else experienced.

“You fell backward in your seat. The candles went out shortly afterward.”

“Let me give us some more light.” Bethany disappeared as Matteo righted my chair. The main bulb sprang to life.

“Did you fall asleep or something?”

“What?...no…I mean, maybe.” I was in a pickle. “It was too dark. I was staring at the candles. Actually, I think I was hypnotized.” Pathetic, but it just sprang to mind.

“Didn’t you close your eyes?”

“I did, at first, briefly.”

“I think we should head back outside. Get some fresh air. It’s a better place to talk.” Bethany said.

We rewound our steps with me itching to leave. I’d yet to discover what, if anything, Bethany had learned about me from that little experience, and I didn’t want to find out. Thanks to the Devil I had the ability to stop the Sutekhnese, which meant we didn’t need Bethany’s help any more. Best cut our ties with her before she probed me for an explanation, possibly alerting Matteo to anything strange.

I tugged on his shirt to indicate I wanted him to duck so I could whisper.

“I think we should go.”

“What? We’ve just started.”

“I’m not sure she can help us. The séance, or whatever that was, was a complete disaster. I think we have enough to work it out ourselves.”

“I’m not too sure about that.”

“I think she’s loopy. We shouldn’t get involved with her.”

Matteo stopped unexpectedly and I left him behind a few steps.

“What happened back there?”

I backtracked then leaned toward him, still whispering. “Good question. I think she was trying to hypnotize me.”

“Why would she do that?”

“You tell me. Perhaps she’s part of this cult.”

“You’re not making any sense.”

“I got a really creepy vibe back there. And you saw what she did to me when she touched me.”

“What you did, don’t you mean?”

I might as well do sign language for all the good talking did to move us out the door. In the end I resorted to the only tactic left to a woman.

“I want to go. Please.” I looked up at him through my eye lashes and blinked a few times to add a touch of innocence.

“Is everything all right?” Bethany finally realized neither of us were no longer following her.
